We Need An Ad - Today
- The "We Need An Ad Today"
Personal Favorites from the World of Quick Turnarounds - I love a challenge and there is no greater challenge than creating great work on a tight turnaround with no budget. As in, no budget for photography, maybe a little budget for cheap stock photography, and we need it tomorrow. These are some of my favorites. "Overnight sensations" is probably a little much, but hey, its advertising.

Ad ran in publication targeting tour managers
This was ad ran in the programs at the local minor league hockey games. About as subtle as a hockey game.

My Harley Davidson
Got brought on as a freelancer with Victors & Spoils to work on concepts for the 2012 Harley Davidson campaign. It was a great experience and a ton of fun, but also a bit surreal. Everything with V&S is done primarily via email so I was cranking out concepts for this huge iconic American brand, but I had never meet any of the people I was working with. Plus, we were snowed in at the time, so it felt like I was working from the Arctic. From what I was told, it looked like HD was going to pull the trigger on one of my concepts, "My Harley Davidson," but ultimately they decided to re-brief.
The images are of the print ads that were developed for testing and the boards for the spot. Although, the spot wasn't storyboarded the way I had envisioned it, the art work was amazing. Very cool to see an idea given that kind of love, even if it doesn't make the cut. 2012 Advertising, Copywriting -
COMMON MBA
If you have been anywhere near advertising in the past twenty years you certainly are familiar with the legend of "Ad Jesus" aka Alex Bogusky. Like many people, I had always admired the work of Crispin, Porter, & Bogusky and longed to be in an environment that could produce such groundbreaking work. Alex ultimately left the ad world to start COMMON, along with his wife, Ana, and other creative masters John Bielenberg and Rob Schuam.
COMMON is an experiment in what John Bielenberg calls "Thinking Wrong." The concept is to help rapidly prototype and launch new business ventures that have a social conscious. I was selected to be part of COMMON's first Maniacal Business Attack in Greensboro, Alabama. The object being to rapidly prototype a bicycle company that uses the bamboo that grows wild in Alabama to make bike frames.
Greensboro has become a petri dish of sorts, with groups like Samuel Mockbee's Rural Studio, Project M and HERO doing transformational work. It was a "first in a lifetime" experience. I say that rather than the traditional "once in a lifetime" because I a certain I will be doing more ventures like this in the future. In fact, in many ways I already have because I have incorporated so much of what I learned from Alex, John and Rob, along with all the other incredible people I spent time with into my work and daily life. 2012 Branding, Creative Direction, Film -
Cox
COX has been a fantastic partner. Two years ago, we got the opportunity to work on a direct mail piece and we were able to turn that opportunity into a growing relationship. The work often demands quick turnarounds, but we have been able to expand the divisions we are working with from Oklahoma, into Kansas and now Virginia.

SRAM
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. This was the crux of the position SRAM has taken in regards to not incorporating electronic features into their components, a move many of their competitors have already made. Working with Victors & Spoils, SRAM solicited concepts that could be executed in any and all formats. I focused my approach on the disconnect consumers have from the material world and how adding more electronics to cycling creates another layer of insulation between the cyclist and the joy of the mechanics that is a cornerstone of the cycling experience.
Overall, I submitted concepts for guerilla marketing campaigns, short form videos, and print comps, but the V&S process does not allow them to tell me which concepts worked for them. However, this is one of my personal favorites. In exchange for my work, SRAM and V&S sent me a bike. A really, really, really, nice bike. 2012 Creative Direction, Advertising, Copywriting -
Tulsa Tech
At the end of every school year, most high schools will announce where graduating seniors will be attending college or which branch of military they will be attending. For Tulsa Tech, we wanted to go beyond raising awareness. We wanted to give those kids who weren't headed off to college or joining the military something they could own. We wanted to create an image of who they would be - The skilled men and women who take great pride in their work and are making an extremely important contribution to society.

BSW
BSW was an architecture and engineering firm that tasked us with helping them increase brand awareness. At issue was how to convey a sense of creativity and passion from an organization known primarily as a builder of big box retail stores. The ads ran in trade publications across the nation and the subsequent success led the company to incorporate the messaging across all their platforms.

Spencer Stone Co
With a dedicated following, Spencer Stone has been able to build a thriving boutique men's clothing shop in Oklahoma City, OK. His clothes can be seen in high powered board rooms, post NFL game press conferences, and on the well-to-do gents throughout the country trying to make a name for themselves.
As a long time friend of Spencer's, his boisterous and no-nonsense personality were an obvious draw when looking for subjects. However, he has a real passion for what he does and as someone who has never been particularly interested in clothing, I was curious to find out why he was drawn to it. And he does not disappoint. 2012 Creative Direction, Directing, Film -

InTrust Bank Arena
“Don’t put a picture of the building in the ad” was undoubtedly one of the first things discussed when InTrust Bank Arena tapped us to create a new print ad campaign for Pollstar magazine. So instead of falling in line with the industry standard of showing the target demo what they would see when they arrived at the arena, we opted to show them what they would experience;top-flight service from the arena staff who are driven by a deep passion for music and the music business. To achieve this, we played off of the individual staff member’s first concert to convey where their inspiration comes from. The campaign resonated with Pollstar readers and the Arena got a fantastic response, creating vital name recognition within the industry for the staff.

LAX Retrofit
Miyamoto International wanted to document the revolutionary solution they developed to retrofit the LAX Theme Building. However, as is often the case, they lacked the funds to produce a quality video. Our team developed a "CO-OP" structure to the proposal which allowed multiple stakeholders to contribute to the budget. This translated into a higher quality final product than what any of the individual stakeholders could produce on their own, plus they all have access to the library of assets we created that will enable them to make company specific videos in the future.

Trojan: "Dad?"
No college film/commercial portfolio would be complete without a condom concept. This was mine. The inspiration for this spot is arguably more entertaining than the spot. But it is a story best told in person.

Fox Sports: "Not in My House"
A friend was location managing a Jack in the Box shoot at the Rose Bowl and got me access to the site manager. After some sweet talking, I got approval to shoot at 1/10th of the normal rate. The production was thrown together in less than a week and shot for less than $5k. Part of my portfolio from the Art Center

Heineken: "Jackass"
I'm a beer snob when I can afford to be. Shot this while at the Art Center in my apartment on Beechwood Dr under the Hollywood sign. The hardest part of the production was wrangling the actors because it was Oscar night and from what I gather actors are into that type of thing. So the shoot was one or two takes max but we got it made.
